Our Program

What makes our program different?

We don’t just breed service dogs — we breed dogs that are built for greatness. From future competition partners to loyal family companions, our dogs are raised with purpose and love. Each litter is raised with a hands-on, purpose-driven approach that blends cutting-edge puppy development protocols with time-tested training techniques.

From day one, our puppies experience:

★ Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) for resilience and adaptability

★ Early Scent Imprinting (ESI) to build a foundation for medical alert work

★ Structured socialization to ensure confidence in all environments

★ Foundational puppy training for future service dogs to prepare them for the work ahead. By the time our puppies go home, they’re already displaying the confidence, environmental stability, and working drive that make them stand out from the crowd.

★ Formal temperament and aptitude testing, we match the right puppy to your family. But we don’t stop there.

Lifetime Support. We’re here for the long haul, supporting our clients through every step of the journey. From helping you choose the right puppy to offering guidance in training, we’re committed to making the perfect match. Whether you’re seeking a future service dog, a competition partner, or an outstanding family companion, our dogs are bred to excel.

At the heart of our breeding program is a passion for producing not just good dogs, but great dogs — dogs that change lives, just as our own service dogs have changed ours.

Welcome to our journey. Welcome to our family.

Our Puppy Curriculum

We believe great dogs don’t just happen—they’re raised with intention, care, and a whole lot of hands-on love. Every puppy in our program is born and raised right inside our home, where they’re surrounded by family life, everyday sounds, and gentle handling from the very beginning.

We blend the best of proven puppy-raising methods—including advanced service dog curriculum, Puppy Culture and Avidog—to give each pup a strong foundation for life. These programs help us shape confident, adaptable, and resilient puppies who are ready for whatever path they take—whether it’s working as a service dog, joining an active family, or stepping into the spotlight of a competition ring.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

★ Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) to boost brain development and sensory awareness.

★ Structured exposure to novel sights, sounds, surfaces, and gentle challenges to build confidence and curiosity.

★ Age-appropriate problem-solving games, obstacle work, and confidence-building exercises to prepare puppies for real-world success.

★ Socialization with children, adults, and other animals in a safe, controlled environment.

★ Crate conditioning, early house manners, and start-to-finish support to ease the transition to your home.

By combining science-backed techniques with the warmth of a family environment, we give our puppies the very best start—helping them grow into balanced, biddable, and emotionally sound dogs ready for a lifetime of love and purpose.

What is Puppy Culture?

Puppy Culture is a program developed by breeders, veterinarians, and animal behaviorists that focuses on early neurological and social development from birth through 12 weeks.

We use Puppy Culture practices to support your puppy through each critical developmental window, including:

★ Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

★ Startle recovery & confidence building

★ Problem-solving games

★ Litter box training and crate conditioning

★ Puppy manding (how puppies “ask” politely)

★ Age-appropriate socialization and enrichment

★ Habituation to sights, sounds, surfaces, and handling

These little lessons add up big. By giving puppies the right experiences at the right time, we help them build stronger brains, steadier emotions, and a better ability to learn. They grow up braver, more adaptable, and more bonded to their humans.

What is Avidog?

Avidog is another gold-standard puppy development program rooted in decades of research and real-world results. It places strong emphasis on breeder responsibility, physical development, structure, and early learning, which fits right in with the kind of thoughtful, intentional work we do here.

Avidog-inspired practices we follow include:

★ Structured age-appropriate challenges to develop coordination and problem-solving

★ Daily early handling and touch conditioning

★ Environmental exposure that builds confidence and flexibility

★ Thoughtful weaning and meal-time games

★ Developing emotional resilience so pups can bounce back from stress in healthy ways

With Avidog, we make sure every pup’s body, mind, and heart are nurtured—so they’re set up for a lifetime of wellness, connection, and joy.

Why does it matter?

Because puppies aren’t just born great—they’re raised great. And that takes time, care, and a whole lot of intention. These early weeks are where trust is built, confidence is shaped, and future service dogs, therapy dogs, competitors, and loyal family companions are born.

When you bring home a puppy from our program, you’re not just getting a dog—you’re getting a pup who has been loved, handled, enriched, and thoughtfully guided since the day they were born. You’re getting the benefit of proven methods that raise dogs with heart, smarts, and the kind of emotional stability that can last a lifetime.

We don’t just raise pups—we raise partners.

And around here, we believe every pup deserves the best start possible.

Nutrition

Why Do We Introduce Raw Nutrition at Weaning?

At Salty Raccoon Ranch, we believe quality nutrition begins with the very first meal! As our puppies transition from mother’s milk to solid food, we introduce a carefully planned raw feeding program designed to support their growing nutritional needs.

Puppyhood is a critical period for physical growth, brain development, immune function, and overall health. That’s why we focus on complete, balanced nutrition appropriate for growing German Shepherd puppies.

Our nutritional priorities include:

  • Healthy Growth: Essential nutrients for developing muscles, bones, and joints.

  • Digestive Health: Gradual food introduction and attention to individual needs.

  • Skin & Coat Health: Balanced nutrition for healthy skin and coats.

  • Brain Development: Nutrients essential for normal neurological development.

  • Long-Term Wellness: Establishing healthy feeding habits early.

Nutrition matters for every puppy, whether their future includes family adventures, dog sports, or service work.

While our puppies begin on raw food, we provide personalized feeding guidance, transition recommendations, and access to trusted nutrition partners to help families choose an appropriate feeding plan.

Our goal is simple: give every puppy a healthy nutritional foundation for a lifetime of adventures!

Raw diets require careful formulation and safe handling. We recommend complete and balanced diets appropriate for large-breed puppy growth and encourage families to consult their veterinarian when selecting a feeding plan.

Healthy puppies become happy dogs—and it all starts with what’s in the bowl.
